A confrontation between local youths and officers of the Nigeria Police Force erupted on Saturday evening in the Rimin Gata area, directly opposite Bayero University, Kano (New Site), over an alleged unauthorized horse race.
According to reports by Zagazola Makama, the altercation occurred around 4:50 p.m. and involved operatives from the Rijiyar Zaki Division of the Kano State Police Command. The officers had responded to a tip-off about the horse racing event, which was said to have the potential to escalate into criminal activities, including phone snatching and street violence.
The police surveillance team arrived at the scene intending to disperse the crowd and halt the activity. However, resistance from the horse riders and some youths led to a physical clash between both parties.
Eyewitnesses said the situation quickly escalated when police officers attempted to arrest some of the participants. The riders and their supporters reportedly accused the police of using excessive force, while officers claimed they were merely enforcing public safety protocols.
“Tensions rose fast. There were scuffles between the riders and police. Some people were even throwing stones,” said one resident who witnessed the scene.
While the standoff was eventually brought under control, no fatalities were recorded. It remains unclear whether any arrests were made during the altercation.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Police Command has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
This clash raises fresh concerns about youth gatherings and security management in urban centers like Kano, especially in areas close to universities and other high-density zones.
Authorities are urging community members to refrain from organizing unauthorized public events that could threaten safety and order.
