Award-winning musician and father of four, John Legend, has opened up about how his family is navigating a major life change following the type 1 diabetes diagnosis of his 7-year-old son, Miles. The EGOT winner revealed that the experience has brought his family even closer, with his children showing remarkable unity and care for their brother.
The Hollywood Reporter and Social Impact Fund’s 2025 Social Impact Summit on Thursday, July 24, Legend shared an emotional update on his son’s health journey and how the entire family has been adapting since Miles was diagnosed last summer.
"The younger ones don't really know what's going on, but when they see the devices and things he has to wear, they sometimes have questions," Legend said, referring to Esti, 1, and Wren, just over a year old.
"But his condition is also building grit in him, and as a family, I think it's building it in us as well because we are all rallying together to support him."
John Legend and his wife, model and cookbook author Chrissy Teigen, share four children: Luna (8), Miles (7), Esti (1), and Wren, who joined the family via surrogate in 2023.
Earlier this month, Legend and Miles spent one-on-one time together at a diabetes family camp in Yosemite National Park organized by DYF (Diabetes Youth Families), an experience the singer described as both powerful and heartwarming. Legend posted a series of photos to Instagram, capturing moments of the two hiking, smiling in front of towering trees, and relaxing in their cabin.
"I took Miles on a boys’ trip to a wonderful diabetes family camp @dyf_t1d," Legend wrote in the caption. "Loved having one-on-one time with him at Yosemite. And it was so cool for him to be around a bunch of kids his age and counselors with diabetes. I learned a lot and I’m so grateful to everyone involved."
This isn’t the first time Legend has spoken publicly about Miles' diagnosis. In an earlier interview in September 2024, he shared how the diagnosis has tested and strengthened his family’s resilience.
"My personality is one where I'm very optimistic and I'm very practical," he said at the time. "As soon as I learned that he had this, I knew it was going to be life-changing for him and for us, but I'm also like, 'We can do this.'"
Legend praised the outpouring of support they’ve received and emphasized how the experience has deepened his bond with Teigen.
"This speaks to us feeling like a team and knowing we can do this together. It just makes us stronger."
While Miles is still early in his diagnosis, Legend noted that his family is preparing for what lies ahead.
"Right now, his insulin is still doing some of the work," he explained. "But as the disease progresses, it's going to get to a point where we really need to monitor everything count carbs, give him insulin beforehand. We just have to be more aware."
Despite the challenges, Legend remains committed to staying informed, connected, and supportive, not only as a parent but as a role model for families going through similar journeys.
