A horrific case of domestic violence has left a 22-year-old South African woman, Nompumelelo Gumede, fighting for her life after she was allegedly doused in petrol and set ablaze by her jealous boyfriend, who is also the father of her two-year-old child.
The incident occurred in eMalahleni (Witbank), Mpumalanga Province, and has shocked the local community.
According to reports, the suspect also targeted his own sister, who reportedly tried to intervene and protect Nompumelelo during the assault. Both women were allegedly locked inside a room by the suspect, who then set it on fire after pouring petrol on them.
The victims suffered severe burn injuries and are currently receiving critical care in intensive care units at a local hospital.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and is expected to appear in court on Monday, July 28, facing charges of attempted murder and arson.
The brutal nature of the attack has reignited public outrage over gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa.
“This is yet another example of how unsafe women are, even in their own homes,” a local GBV activist told reporters. “We demand swift justice and stronger measures to protect women from such heinous acts.”
As Nompumelelo battles for her life, her family and community are calling for accountability and justice, urging authorities to ensure that the full weight of the law is brought down on the perpetrator.
