Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Senior Police Officer in Gombe

A senior police officer in Gombe State, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clement Yunana, has died following a hit-and-run incident that occurred on Wednesday evening in the Tumfure area of the state capital.

ASP Yunana, aged 50, was attached to the Railway Police Outstation in Bajoga. According to eyewitness reports, he was attempting to cross the road near the Matrix Filling Station around 5:00 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle heading toward Gombe metropolis. The driver reportedly fled the scene without stopping or offering help.

In a press statement released on Friday, the spokesperson for the Gombe State Police Command, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, confirmed the officer’s death and described the incident as a tragic loss to the force.

“The victim was immediately rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, but was pronounced dead at about 6:50 p.m. the same day,” the statement read.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for an autopsy.

The police have launched a full-scale investigation to identify and apprehend the fleeing driver. DSP Abdullahi also appealed to members of the public with relevant information to come forward.

“The police are appealing to the public for any information that will aid in identifying the vehicle involved in the fatal accident,” he said.

ASP Yunana’s death marks another grim reminder of the dangers faced daily by both officers and civilians on Nigerian roads, often exacerbated by reckless driving and lack of accountability.
