International pop sensation Ed Sheeran has spoken out about the terrifying threats his family has faced, including kidnap attempts and fan break-ins, and the intense security protocols he now maintains to keep his wife, Cherry Seaborn, and their two young daughters, Lyra and Jupiter, safe.
In a heartfelt interview on Australia’s 60 Minutes, the 34-year-old singer pulled back the curtain on the darker side of fame. While the world sees the Grammy-winning star on stage, Sheeran says very few realize the sinister challenges that come with being in the public eye.
“People don’t really take into account the kidnap threats and s**t like that,” he admitted. “We’ve had attempted break-ins, things left on my car. It’s way more sinister than just fans turning up and wanting selfies.”
These experiences have forced Sheeran to put strict protective measures in place. “We have a level of security that probably won’t change until I pass away,” he said candidly. “That’s just our life now.”
One of Sheeran’s boundaries includes keeping his daughters completely out of the public spotlight. While he’s open to fans taking photos of him, he draws the line when it comes to his kids, a decision that has led to “real arguments” with those who try to invade their privacy.
“I’m fine with taking pictures,” he explained, “but I just think it’s weird with a four-year-old and a three-year-old.”
The singer expressed a deep desire for his children to live as normal a life as possible, acknowledging that his global fame may always pose a challenge. “To be within the public sphere, you have to take it all, the good and the bad. But I think I would definitely want a more normal life for my kids.”
This isn't the first time Sheeran has opened up about the impact of fame on his personal life. Just last month, in a conversation with Louis Theroux on his podcast, Sheeran shared that he has installed 24-hour security around his home due to multiple disturbing incidents.
“There’ve been a couple of weird things over the years,” he said. “Just dangerous people… break-in attempts and stuff like that.”
Sheeran noted that while this level of security may not seem “normal” to outsiders, it’s fairly common in the entertainment industry.
“Lots of people I know have way more security and stuff like that. It’s just one of those unspoken parts of being in the public eye.”
Despite the glamor often associated with celebrity life, Ed Sheeran’s revelations serve as a powerful reminder of the real-world risks and emotional toll that come with fame, especially for families trying to navigate safety in an unpredictable world.
