Julian Cole, a 19-year-old university student, was left paralyzed and brain-damaged after a scuffle with police and nightclub doormen outside a nightclub in Bedford in May 2013. He died 12 years later, on March 7, 2025, at the age of 31.
An investigation revealed that three Bedfordshire Police officers, PCs Nicholas Oates, Sanjeev Kalyan, and Hannah Ross, lied about the incident and were found guilty of misconduct. They were sacked in 2018.
In 2024, Julian's family agreed to an out-of-court settlement of £1.2 million with the police, without the force accepting liability. The North London Coroner has now commenced an investigation into the causes of Julian's death.
The incident occurred when Julian was "taken to the ground" by police and bouncers outside the Elements nightclub. Despite CCTV footage showing him being carried, with his legs dragging on the ground and head hanging down, the officers claimed he was able to walk and get into the police van.
