A 23-year-old man, Chiemelie Nnaji, has tragically lost his life during a spiritual cleansing ritual in Enugu. The incident occurred on June 5, when Chiemelie's mother, Ezenwanyi, took him and a middle-aged client to the Mmiri Ani river in Obiagu for an exorcism ritual.
According to eyewitnesses, Chiemelie, who suffered from epilepsy, relapsed and fell into the river while his mother was conducting the ritual. Despite being notified, Ezenwanyi continued chanting incantations, refusing to assist her drowning son. It was the client who intervened and raised the alarm, attracting people from the neighborhood who helped rescue Chiemelie.
Unfortunately, Chiemelie was rejected by two hospitals before being pronounced dead at a third hospital. An eyewitness revealed, "The two hospitals we took him to rejected him. It was at the third hospital that he was pronounced dead."
The Enugu state police command has arrested the spiritualist involved in the incident. This tragic event raises questions about the risks associated with spiritual rituals and the importance of prioritizing human life and safety.
