A 44-year-old man, Jason Thornburg, has been sentenced to death in Tarrant County, Texas, for the brutal murders of three individuals: David Lueras, 42, Maricruz Mathis, 33, and Lauren Phillips, 34. The murders took place over a seven-day period in September 2021 at the Mid City Inn in Euless, where Thornburg lured each victim to his room before killing them.
Thornburg's crimes were particularly disturbing, involving dismemberment and incineration of the victims' bodies. He was arrested after law enforcement officials obtained CCTV footage showing his Jeep Grand Cherokee near the crime scene where the bodies were dumped and set alight. The investigation revealed that Thornburg had consumed part of one victim's heart and severed another's penis.
The jury delivered a guilty verdict after considering the substantial evidence presented in court, which included chilling details of the motel slayings. The presiding judge sentenced Thornburg to death, stating, "Therefore, Jason Allen Thornburg, you have been adjudged by a jury to be guilty of capital murder... This court sentences you, Jason Allen Thornburgh, to death." Thornburg's conviction and death penalty will be automatically reviewed by the Court of Criminal Appeals.
Thornburg has also allegedly confessed to two additional killings: his 61-year-old roommate, Mark Jewell, who died in a suspicious home explosion in May 2021, and his former girlfriend, Tanya Begay, in Arizona in 2017. The FBI still considers Begay's case open, as her body has never been found.
