A Democratic state lawmaker in Minnesota, Melissa Hortman, and her husband were shot and killed on Saturday in what authorities are calling a "targeted political attack". The incident occurred at the couple's home and has prompted a sweeping investigation by state and federal agencies.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz confirmed the deaths and described the attack as a deliberate act of political violence. According to Chief of the Brooklyn Park Police Department, Mark Bruley, officers responded to the Hoffman residence and later checked on Hortman's home, where they encountered an individual dressed in a police-style uniform who opened fire on officers before retreating into the residence.
In a separate but related incident, Senator John Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times. They underwent surgery, and Governor Walz is cautiously optimistic that they will survive "this assassination attempt". The suspect escaped after exchanging gunfire with the police, and an extensive manhunt involving hundreds of officers and SWAT teams is underway.
Authorities have ordered residents in the Brooklyn Park area to shelter in place, and several individuals have been detained for questioning, but no arrests have been made. US President Donald Trump has been briefed on the "terrible shooting" in Minnesota and stated that it appears to be a "targeted attack against state lawmakers".
Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth, a Republican, condemned the attack as "evil" and expressed her heartbreak over the killings. Gabrielle Giffords, a former US representative and gun violence prevention advocate, also condemned the shooting, saying it was an attack on American democracy itself.
