A devastating attack on a Damascus church has claimed 25 lives and left 63 others injured, according to the Syrian health ministry. The incident occurred on Sunday at Saint Elias Church in the Dwelaa district of the capital.
Syrian interim President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has vowed that all individuals responsible for the attack will be brought to justice. He described the incident as a "heinous crime" and called for national unity in the face of terror.
Authorities have confirmed that the assailant was affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) group. The President promised that the government will work tirelessly to capture all those who participated in and planned the crime and bring them to justice.
The President stressed the importance of national cohesion, stating that the crime "reminds us of the importance of solidarity between government and people in confronting threats to our nation's security and stability"
The attack marks the first major terrorist assault targeting a church in Damascus since Syria's civil war began in 2011.
