A 200-level student of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) Lapai, identified as Jafar, has been murdered by armed robbers in Niger State. The incident occurred at about 2:30 am near the university's gate, where the robbers invaded Jafar's lodge and stabbed him in the neck.
The killing sparked widespread outrage among students, who blocked the Agaie-Lapai road to protest the incident. In a viral video, the students were seen gathered and reportedly killing one of the robbers. The students are demanding increased security presence in Lapai, citing the frequent killings of students occurring off-campus.
The students called on the state government and host community to design a comprehensive security architecture to safeguard the entire city of Lapai. They suggested that the university should have a police outpost within or around the campus to enhance safety.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident and stated that police operatives were dispatched to the scene. The Commissioner of Police has directed that the perpetrators be arrested and brought to book. Tactical teams have been deployed to Lapai to restore normalcy and investigate the incident.
