Six American nationals have been arrested by South Korean authorities for allegedly attempting to smuggle bottles containing rice and Bibles into North Korea. The individuals, aged between their 20s and 50s, were apprehended early Friday morning as they tried to launch thousands of plastic bottles into the sea from Ganghwa Island, located just 10 kilometers from North Korea's maritime border.
The head of the investigation team at Ganghwa Police Station in Incheon confirmed the arrest, stating that the Americans were suspected of violating the Framework Act on the Management of Disasters and Safety. An interpreter was provided for the Americans, who could not speak Korean, and questioning has begun.
Ganghwa Island has been a frequent launch site for activist campaigns targeting North Korea, with groups often sending bottles or balloons carrying rice, K-pop content, or South Korean dramas. However, the South Korean government has designated the area as a danger zone due to concerns that such actions could provoke the North.
The incident comes amid a backdrop of tensions between the two Koreas, which had escalated into a propaganda battle. North Korea had sent trash-filled balloons across the border, claiming it was in retaliation for South Korean propaganda efforts. However, following the inauguration of President Lee Jae Myung, South Korea has taken a more conciliatory stance, suspending loudspeaker broadcasts and prompting North Korea to halt its cross-border noise transmissions.
