A 33-year-old woman, Khushmandeep Kaur, was arrested in Punjab's Muktsar district for allegedly poisoning her husband and in-laws on Monday, resulting in the deaths of her husband and mother-in-law. Her father-in-law remains critical.
The police believe an extramarital affair was a likely factor behind the crime. Khushmandeep was allegedly in a relationship with another man, Chamkaur Singh, and had been in regular contact with him. The police also arrested Chamkaur and Khushmandeep's mother, Paramjit Kaur, in connection with the case.
According to the police, Khushmandeep confessed to poisoning the food with insecticide and admitted she was unhappy in the marriage. The forensic team has collected food samples from the crime scene, and the investigation is ongoing. The police have booked the accused under sections 103 (murder), 109(2) (attempt to murder), and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Khushmandeep and her husband, Shivtaar Singh, had been married for only four months. According to the police, Khushmandeep had once left her marital home to be with her alleged boyfriend but was brought back by the family after a compromise. During interrogation, she allegedly said that she took the extreme step as she was unwilling to continue in the marriage.
