The Oyo State Government has ordered the evacuation of residents living near Iyamopo hill in Igbeti due to minor tremors and rock movements that occurred over the weekend. The government has assured the public that there is no cause for alarm, but as a precautionary measure, residents are advised to temporarily vacate the area until a permanent solution is reached.
According to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the disruption is a result of physical weathering on the rock caused by intense heat from February to May, followed by sudden cooling. This has led to cracking, peeling, and sheeting, resulting in minor tremors and rock movements.
The government has dispatched experts from the Oyo State Solid Mineral Development Agency (OYSMIDA) and the University of Ibadan to analyze the geological activity and provide solutions to mitigate future occurrences. The experts will work to develop strategies to safeguard lives and property in the affected area.
The Oyo State Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens. Prince Oyelade assured the public that the government will continue to prioritize public safety and provide updates as investigations progress.
