A 25-year-old man, Raji Ridwan, has confessed to attempting to assault a 17-year-old female student of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Osun State. His admission, which has sparked outrage across social media, sheds light on yet another troubling case of gender-based violence in Nigeria.
Suspect Claims Cold Weather Prompted His Actions
In his statement to authorities, Ridwan claimed that the incident occurred shortly after rainfall when the weather had turned cold. According to his own account, the girl passed by his location and asked about the landlady of the house. Ridwan admitted he tried to engage her in conversation, asking if she knew the house owner.
However, the girl reportedly ignored his inquiry and walked into her room without responding. Ridwan then confessed that it was at that moment he made the attempt, citing the weather as a trigger.
“It had just stopped raining and it was cold,” Ridwan said. “Suddenly, the girl passed by and asked after the landlady. I asked her whether she knew the lady, but she refused to answer and went straight into her room.”
Public Outcry Over Disturbing Justification
Ridwan’s comments have drawn swift condemnation online, with many describing his justification as appalling and disturbing. Critics argue that his attempt to rationalize such behavior under the guise of weather conditions is both unacceptable and dangerous.
Calls for strict legal consequences have intensified as citizens demand accountability. Many online commentators have urged law enforcement to ensure that the suspect faces appropriate charges to discourage similar actions in the future.
Ongoing Concern About Safety of Female Students
This incident highlights growing concerns over the safety of young women, especially students, within and around academic communities. Advocacy groups continue to press for stronger protective measures and legal reforms to address the rising tide of abuse and attempted assaults across the country.
