A woman, Blessing Eze, has been brutally stabbed to death in Ogun State by a group of touts who were demanding a festival tax of ₦1,500 from traders. The incident occurred on June 6, 2025, during the Eid Mubarak festival, when the touts began harassing traders, including Mrs. Eze, who refused to pay.
According to eyewitnesses, Mrs. Eze told the touts that she didn't have the money at the time, and they began destroying her goods. When she tried to intervene, one of the touts stabbed her in the chest, leading to her death. This incident has sparked outrage among the Igbo community in Ifo, Ogun State.
In response to the tragic incident, the Igbo Market Union at Ifo market has shut down their businesses in protest. The union has declared a 4-day mourning period, during which Igbo traders will not display goods and will instead focus on protesting until the relevant authorities intervene.
The market members are demanding that the Ogun State Government intervene and bring the perpetrators to justice. One market member recounted a similar incident that occurred last year, where the son of the Baba Loja (market head) stabbed his wife, and the case was dropped due to the suspect's alleged connections. The traders are imploring the government to take action and ensure that justice is served.
