A 19-year-old nursing student in Navi Mumbai allegedly took his own life due to continuous caste-based harassment and humiliation by his college principal. The student, a member of a Scheduled Caste community, was in his first year of BSc Nursing at a private nursing college in Panvel.
According to the FIR, the principal repeatedly subjected the student to humiliating casteist slurs and degrading comments, including remarks questioning his masculinity. The student reportedly found it increasingly difficult to cope with the incessant harassment, which ultimately led him to take the extreme step of ending his life.
The student's mother lodged a complaint against the principal, leading to the registration of an FIR. The principal faces charges of abetment to suicide and violations under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. While no arrests have been made yet, the police are investigating the matter and gathering evidence.
