Barely two weeks after the devastating Mokwa flood in Niger State, another flood has occurred in Bida, the capital of Bida local government area. The incident happened on Saturday, with torrential rain lasting for about five hours, causing widespread destruction.
Eleven houses were submerged, properties lost, and a bridge and culvert were swept away, but fortunately, no life was lost. Areas greatly affected include the Kodogi/Nasarafatu road and Federal Polytechnic to G.R.A road.
The state government, led by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Mohammed Yakubu Kolo, has led a delegation for an on-the-spot assessment. The government has promised to commence the rehabilitation of the affected areas within the next 48 hours and address the ecological challenges bedeviling the area.
Unlike the Mokwa flood, the cause of the Bida flood has been attributed to a road construction company handling rehabilitation roads in the area. Residents claim that the company diverted the drainage, leading to the destruction of properties worth millions of naira.
