A 27-year-old mother, Kulsuma Akter, was stabbed to death outside a shop in Bradford city centre in April 2024. Her husband, Habibur Masum, has pleaded guilty to her manslaughter and possession of a bladed article but has denied a charge of murder. The baby she was pushing in a pram at the time of the attack was unharmed.
CCTV footage showed a "ferocious and ultimately deadly attack" on Ms Akter, who suffered multiple stab wounds to her body and face. After stabbing her, Mr Masum moved away from the scene, leaving her for dead without a second thought for her or the baby. Ms Akter was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary, where she died shortly after from a combination of a stab wound to the neck and blood loss.
The prosecution alleged that Mr Masum had a history of violence, jealousy, and controlling behaviour towards Ms Akter. She had been housed in a refuge to escape her husband's abuse and had told a social worker she believed he would kill her. In November 2023, Mr Masum became jealous over a message Ms Akter received from a male colleague, leading to a violent outburst. He grabbed her face, slapped her, and pulled her hair, saying, "I am going to murder you, and the police will be taking me."
The jury heard that Mr Masum had sent Ms Akter threatening messages and photos, including one of the refuge where she was staying. He was arrested three days after Ms Akter's death in a car park near Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire. Mr Masum's defence is expected to argue that he was suffering from an abnormality of mind or lost control, but the prosecution disputes this.
