A 43-year-old man, Paul Campbell, has been sentenced to 21 years in prison with an additional five years on extended license for killing 62-year-old Gordon Ogunmuyiwa, a retired medical doctor, in London. The incident occurred on Christmas Eve in 2022 and shocked the Thornton Heath community in south-east London.
Ogunmuyiwa was found dead at Campbell's residence on Dunheved Road West after a brutal and sustained assault. The two men knew each other, and Ogunmuyiwa had visited Campbell on what turned out to be the last day of his life. Campbell launched a vicious attack on the older man, inflicting multiple injuries, and instead of seeking immediate help, he calmly contacted emergency services only after fleeing the scene.
Investigators uncovered a history of physical abuse and intimidation directed at Ogunmuyiwa by Campbell. A post-mortem examination confirmed that the victim had sustained numerous injuries over a prolonged period, suggesting repeated episodes of violence. Campbell also used Ogunmuyiwa's bank cards after his death to make purchases, including buying a mobile phone from a second-hand store.
Campbell was convicted of manslaughter on May 8, 2025, and sentenced to 21 years in prison. Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Townsend described the case as "heartbreaking," noting that the victim was a gentle and trusting individual. "Campbell preyed on Gordon's vulnerability and showed no remorse. His actions were both brutal and cowardly," she said. The sentencing brings some sense of closure to Ogunmuyiwa's family and the local community, who have mourned the loss of a man remembered for his kindness, humility, and quiet nature.
