Tragedy in Ilorin: 43-Year-Old Man Dies After Jumping Into a Well
A somber atmosphere enveloped the Edun area of Ilorin, Kwara State, on Friday, June 6, 2025, after a 43-year-old man identified only as Kazeem lost his life in a deeply troubling incident. According to local reports, Kazeem jumped into a domestic well shortly after returning from Eid prayers, allegedly under the influence of a hard substance commonly referred to as Colo or Colorado.
Incident Followed Eid Prayer
Kazeem had just returned from the Eid-el-Kabir prayer when he reportedly ingested the substance before leaping into the well located in the Alapo compound. The circumstances surrounding his actions have raised serious concerns about the growing issue of drug abuse and its potentially fatal consequences.
Emergency Response and Recovery Efforts
The Kwara State Fire Service confirmed that they received a distress call around 10:29 a.m. on the same day and swiftly mobilized a rescue team to the scene. Firemen were able to recover Kazeem’s body from the well.
Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson for the State Fire Service, stated:
The victim, identified as Kazeem, reportedly jumped into the well under the influence of a hard substance known as Colo (Colorado) shortly after returning from Eid prayers.
The deceased’s body was later handed over to Inspector Babatunde Amos of the ‘C’ Division Police Station in Ilorin. Authorities are awaiting formal identification and collection of the body by Kazeem’s family.
Fire Service Issues Warning on Drug Use
In the wake of the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, issued a stern warning to the public.
“Residents must avoid the use of hard drugs. Substance abuse often leads to irreversible tragedies like this,” he cautioned.
The agency stressed the need for collective action and awareness to curb drug abuse, especially during periods of communal celebration such as religious holidays.
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Concerns
The incident has once again drawn attention to the dangerous rise in the use of synthetic drugs like Colorado, which are known to induce extreme behavior and mental instability. Public health experts warn that even a single use can result in hallucinations, paranoia, and in extreme cases, fatal actions.
A Time for Reflection
As the community mourns this preventable loss, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the silent mental health and substance abuse crises brewing in various parts of the country.
