A widow, Maria Chindamo, was brutally murdered and fed to pigs in Limbadi, Italy, in 2016, allegedly by mafia gangsters. The motive behind her killing was her attempt to rebuild her life and business after her husband's death, which left her with valuable land that caught the attention of the mafia.
A massive operation by Italy's anti-mafia police force was carried out against the 'Ndrangheta in Vibo, Calabria, where prosecutors uncovered disturbing evidence of unsolved crimes, including Maria's horrific murder. Chief Prosecutor Nicola Gratteri led the raid and stated that Maria was killed because she wanted to be a "woman and a free entrepreneur".
The investigation relied heavily on intercepted communications and interviews with 18 informants who provided police with specific details about the case. According to Gratteri, Maria's killing was a result of her newfound freedom and management of the land she inherited, which threatened the interests of a 'Ndrangheta family. Her decision to post photos with her new partner on social media may have also contributed to her murder.
Maria's brother, Vincenzo Chindamo, expressed relief that justice had been served in his sister's case, saying, "There is a scent of justice in the area." He praised the judiciary's perseverance in uncovering the truth behind Maria's killing. Vincenzo also condemned the 'Ndrangheta subculture, stating that it is "retrograde and losers," while his sister's memory continues to shine.
The arrests bring hope that the ruthless Calabrian 'Ndrangheta will be held accountable for their crimes. As Gratteri noted, "You could not afford the luxury of starting a new life, of managing that land in an entrepreneurial way and of being able to take care of and raise your children in a free way and leaving the mafia mentality".
