Residents of Natufe Estate and surrounding neighborhoods in Surulere, Lagos State, staged a protest against the construction of a cemetery in their community. Despite heavy rainfall, dozens of residents, including families, elders, and community leaders, gathered at the site, voicing strong opposition to the project.
The protesters, led by Alhaja Omolabake Aminat Braimoh, Chairperson of the Nature/Animashaun Community Development Association (CDA), accused the developer, Olumide Amure, of reviving a project that was previously halted due to community resistance. They expressed concerns that the cemetery could contaminate the groundwater and lead to serious health issues.
Public health experts warn that cemeteries in residential areas pose serious risks, particularly where boreholes supply drinking water. The community has submitted formal complaints to the Coker-Aguda Local Council and plans to reach other relevant authorities.
The community is calling on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene and stop the project. The local councillor has confirmed that no formal approval has been presented and promised to escalate the matter. The residents say their protests will continue peacefully until their demands are met.
