Gunmen believed to be members of the 'Mahmuda' group attacked Karongi town in the Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing one person and burning many houses in the community. The bandits invaded the town early in the morning, taking advantage of the absence of local vigilantes who had traveled to attend a training workshop or celebrate Eid-el-Kabir outside the community.
The gunmen, who were unchallenged between 6am and 11am, killed a resident and set some houses ablaze. However, a combined team of soldiers and vigilantes mobilized from adjoining settlements in the area eventually dislodged the bandits from the community. The Emir of Yashikira Emirate, Umoru Sariki, confirmed the incident, stating that one person was killed and many houses were burnt by the bandits.
The emir appealed to the Federal Government and the military to establish a security base in Karongi or neighboring communities to safeguard the lives of people living in the area. The Nigerian Army confirmed the attack, while the police spokesperson in Kwara State claimed to be unaware of the incident. As the situation continues to unfold.
