A joint security operation aimed at rescuing a kidnapped victim in Kwara State on June 23, 2025, ended in tragedy, resulting in the deaths of both the victim, Alhaji Dauda Isma'il, and a local armed vigilante, Haruna Tasusuno. The incident occurred during a gun battle with suspected kidnappers in Korori village, located in Baruten Local Government Area.
The rescue team, comprising soldiers, police officers, vigilantes, and hunters, encountered the kidnappers during a coordinated bush combing exercise. During the exchange of gunfire, Tasusuno was shot in the stomach and later succumbed to his injuries at the General Hospital in Okuta. One of the suspected kidnappers was gunned down, and security operatives recovered an AK-47 rifle and live ammunition.
The remains of the kidnapped victim, Alhaji Isma'il, were later discovered in the forest bearing multiple machete wounds. Both Tasusuno and Isma'il were buried according to Islamic rites. However, the body of the slain suspected kidnapper was seized by an enraged mob and set ablaze before additional security personnel could arrive.
Security agencies have intensified their efforts to apprehend the remaining members of the fleeing gang. The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region and the need for continued efforts to combat kidnapping and other forms of crime.
