Brazil’s Football Icon Pele Left Behind a Grand Mansion Now Overtaken by Decay and Nature
Two years after the passing of football legend Pele, his once luxurious beachside mansion in Guarujá, Brazil, has become a haunting relic of the past. Overgrown, vandalized, and abandoned in appearance, the discovery made by content creators in 2024 has sparked emotional reactions among fans and raised questions about property rights, preservation, and legacy.
A Glimpse Inside Pele’s Forgotten Paradise
In 2024, Brazilian influencer Lucas Wesley and two fellow content creators entered the late icon's beachfront mansion on Pernambuco Beach. The estate, reportedly worth millions, once featured a football pitch, a swimming pool, a tennis court, and a lively bar area where Pele entertained guests.
Wesley, who uploaded a 90-minute video of their exploration, said the group found the garage door ajar and received no response when calling out, prompting them to explore the property. The footage, shared widely on TikTok and Instagram, shows a structure visibly reclaimed by nature: algae-filled pool, a football pitch covered in thick greenery, and rusted gates concealed by overgrowth.
“Getting to know this place and seeing up close everything that once belonged to Pelé is indescribable,” Wesley said.
“For any football fan who knows his story, it’s an emotional experience.”
Once a Haven, Now in Ruins
The interior of the mansion, as seen in the video, was littered with forgotten items, photo frames, scattered belongings, a messy office space, and graffiti-tagged walls. Cobwebs draped the windows and walls, while the once-vibrant garden had turned into a dense thicket.
The bar, once a central space for social gatherings, was visibly decaying. The swimming pool, left unattended, had turned green due to algae accumulation. Wesley described the overall condition as “dirty and vandalised,” adding that the state of disrepair left him and his friends deeply saddened.
Legal Dispute Over Ownership and Trespass
Despite the viral label of the mansion as "abandoned," the legal status tells a different story. According to Edinho, Pele’s son, the property is an inherited estate still under family control.
His lawyer, Augusto Miglioli, stated that Wesley and his team had no legal right to enter the property and would be “held civilly and criminally responsible” for trespassing. Another lawyer, Thyago Garcia, emphasized that a building cannot be considered abandoned unless the legal owner expresses a clear intent to relinquish control.
“The mere deterioration, lack of maintenance, or even being unoccupied for a long time does not suffice to classify it as legally abandoned,” Garcia explained.
“Possession and ownership are protected by law regardless of property condition.”
A Legacy Overshadowed by Neglect
Pele, who passed away at age 82 on December 29, 2022, left behind not just a sports legacy but also properties like this mansion, which now stand as reminders of time’s inevitable passage. His illustrious football career began in 1958 when he won the FIFA World Cup at just 17. He spent most of his club career with Santos FC before moving to the U.S. to play for New York Cosmos, retiring in 1977.
Post-retirement, he became a global ambassador for football and supported multiple charitable efforts. His health declined in 2021 following a colon cancer diagnosis, leading to his death from multiple organ failure in 2022.
What Comes Next for Pele’s Estate?
The viral footage of Pele’s dilapidated mansion has reignited public interest in how the estates of cultural icons are managed after their passing.
Will this online exposure prompt the preservation of Pele’s former home as a national landmark or does it mark the beginning of a deeper legal and familial struggle over his legacy?
