Ari Davis, a woman from the United States, has gone viral on social media for weaving her late grandmother's locs into her own hair as a tribute. Davis' grandmother, Gwendolyn Powell, had been growing her locs for almost 30 years, and Davis wanted to find a way to keep her memory alive.
Davis and her grandmother shared a deep bond, with Powell being a role model and activist in her life. Powell was a trailblazer in her professional life, working at IBM when it was unheard of for Black women to do so. Davis said, "She was a major activist in high school and participated in the March on Washington... She was always there for me, and I was there for her, especially in her later years"
After her grandmother's passing, Davis' family wanted to take some of her locs as a keepsake. However, Davis decided to take it a step further by weaving one of the locs into her own hair. She said, "It was just automatic. I knew I wanted it in my hair. It felt like the most natural way to honor her"
Davis worked with her longtime hairstylist to weave the loc into her hair. The process involved locking Davis' hair into a little loc and then attaching her grandmother's loc to it. Davis said, "It took a lot of heart to put the loc into her own hair... It felt like I was walking in my grandmother's footsteps, even if it was just for one loc"
For Davis, wearing the loc in her hair serves as a reminder of her grandmother's strength, spirit, and love. She said, "Having this loc in my hair brings me comfort... It's like she stays with me, and it's a reminder of her strength, her spirit, and the love she gave me"
