Florida Man Accused of Fatally Punching 1-Year-Old Girl He Was Babysitting Fails to Appear in Court

A 25-year-old man from Florida, Deric Young, has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of 1-year-old Ky'meria German, whom he was babysitting. According to Tallahassee police, Young confessed to repeatedly punching the infant, resulting in severe injuries that ultimately caused her death.

An autopsy revealed that the infant suffered multiple strikes to the head with a closed fist, leading to her death. Young's arrest document states that he sobbed before confessing to the crime, claiming that smoking marijuana made him want to "play" with the infant. The victim's twin brother was present in the room during the alleged abuse but was unharmed.

The victim's mother, Nickaiya Walker, is mourning the loss of her daughter. She expressed her devastation, saying, "She was an innocent baby. She didn’t deserve that at all." Walker described her daughter as a sweet baby who was just beginning to speak and loved the color pink. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to cover the baby's burial expenses, raising over $6,000.

Young failed to appear in court on June 25, despite being scheduled to do so. A judge proceeded with the hearing in his absence, denying bond and prohibiting him from contacting the victim's mother or family. Young's next hearing is scheduled to occur within the next five days.

A balloon release ceremony is planned for June 28 from 5-7 p.m. at Jack L. McLean Jr. Park to honor the victim's memory. The community is coming together to support the family during this difficult time.
