A thunderstorm on Saturday struck 32 cows dead by lightning in the Osara community of Obantoko, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The carcasses of the animals remain unattended, unleashing an overwhelming stench and triggering rising health concerns.
Residents are fearing the outbreak of diseases from what has become a festering environmental disaster. Despite visits from top state officials, locals say no tangible action has been taken, and the cows were left to rot where they fell.
The decomposing bodies of the animals have unleashed a terrible stench, disrupting sleep and daily life. Residents are demanding urgent intervention from the state government to prevent a looming catastrophe. One resident noted that the smell is so intense it woke them up in the morning.
Local health officials visited the site on Tuesday, but residents were told that the burial of the animals was still pending the arrival of excavation machinery. A community elder expressed frustration, noting that the government had acknowledged the risk but remained slow to act.
