A violent cult clash in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, has left one suspected cultist dead and another arrested during a crackdown by security operatives. The incident occurred around Imo Lane, off Uzuakoli Road, a location notorious for cult-related activity and street violence.
The police operation was triggered by a tip-off from a concerned citizen, and operatives from "Operation Crush" stormed the scene. When the cult members attempted to flee, warning shots were fired, and one of the fleeing cultists was hit. The wounded suspect later died from his injuries, while another was apprehended at the scene and is currently assisting with ongoing investigations.
The Abia State government has refuted claims that an innocent bystander was mistakenly killed, insisting that the deceased was a confirmed suspect fleeing the scene. The Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander MacDonald Ubah (retd.), emphasized that the troubled Uzuakoli Road axis is a hotspot for criminal activity, including cultism and armed robbery.
The Abia State government has reiterated its firm stance against criminality, stressing its zero-tolerance policy for cultism and street crime. The government has vowed to restore peace and ensure that criminals no longer have safe havens in the state.
