A 23-year-old bus driver, Martin Asolo-Ogugua, has been sentenced to four years in prison for killing a 9-year-old girl, Ada Bicakci, while driving under the influence of drugs. The incident occurred in Bexleyheath, south-east London, when Asolo-Ogugua fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into Ada and her family.
Asolo-Ogugua tested positive for cannabis after the crash and pleaded guilty to causing Ada's death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs. CCTV footage showed the bus drifting across the carriageway and onto the footpath where Ada was riding her bike.
Ada's death had a devastating impact on her family. Her father, Bora Bicakci, described the tragedy as a "father's ultimate failure" and said their world had been "turned upside down". Ada's organs were donated, helping six other people after her death.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Miranda Jollie called Asolo-Ogugua's actions " reckless and utterly selfish "
