At least five corpses have been recovered by the Civil Guard in the Balearic Sea off Majorca, Spain, with their hands and feet tied up. The bodies are believed to be migrants who attempted to reach the Spanish coastline via a perilous crossing from Algeria.
Police have opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the deaths, but the probe is challenging due to the irregular situation of the migrants, who often don't report abuses during the crossing. The investigations suggest that the migrants may have been murdered for an unknown reason.
The discovery of the bodies has taken place over the last month, with one body recovered on May 18. A private Belgian-flagged vessel spotted a body floating in the sea, and the Civil Guard patrol boat RÃo Segura responded to the alert. The body was found with its hands and feet tied, wearing an orange life jacket.
Civil Guard investigators suspect that the migrants who appeared tied hand and foot could have had a confrontation during the crossing, leading to their murder. The authorities are keeping surveillance devices active in case of new arrivals, especially during this time of year when sea conditions make it easier to navigate in tiny boats.
The Balearics have registered a high concentration of arrivals of boats in recent days, with 344 people rescued between June 20 and June 22. The situation is causing ongoing shock for tourists as bodies have been washing up on beaches, often badly decomposed.
