Benue Police Debunk Herdsmen Attack Claims, Reveal Ex-Convict Behind Wannune Shooting

The Benue State Police Command has clarified that the recent shooting incident in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area, was not an attack by herdsmen, as widely reported on social media. Instead, preliminary investigations revealed that an ex-convict, Saater Aii, was behind the shooting that resulted in one fatality and two injuries. 

According to the police, the incident occurred on June 21, 2025, at about 8:00 p.m., when a distress call was received reporting the shooting of Aondoakaa Yayough along Akume Road in Wannune. Detectives were immediately dispatched to the scene, and an AK-47 rifle was recovered. Although the suspect was initially apprehended by local security operatives, he managed to escape and is currently being pursued by the police. 

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, emphasized that there was no report of herdsmen in Wannune, urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and to rely on official and credible sources for updates. "There was no report of herdsmen in Wannune," DSP Edet stated, highlighting the importance of accurate information in preventing unnecessary panic and misinformation. 

The police investigation has shed light on the circumstances surrounding the Wannune shooting, revealing that it was an isolated incident perpetrated by an ex-convict. As the police work to track down and arrest the suspect.
