The Benue State Police Command has arrested 42 armed herders and bandits across various communities in the state for their involvement in criminal activities. According to the state Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, most of the suspects have already been arraigned in court, with around 20 armed herders currently remanded in custody and awaiting trial.
The police operation, led by tactical teams actively operating in the bushes, aims to make communities safe for displaced residents to return and resume farming activities. The affected areas include Apa, Gwer West, Logo, Katsina-Ala, Ukum, Agatu, and Guma Local Government Areas (LGAs), among others.
"We've taken the fight directly to those behind the attacks and killings in Benue communities," Emenari said, highlighting the police mandate to secure the communities. In the past month alone, 42 armed herders and local bandits have been arrested from these areas, with most already charged in court. About 10 herders are in remand during ongoing trials, while others under investigation will be prosecuted upon conclusion of the process.
The police crackdown is a significant step towards restoring peace and security in Benue State.
