Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has made a startling allegation that some serving politicians in the National Assembly are behind the recent attacks in the state. In an interview on Channels Television's 'Politics Today' program, Alia expressed his concern over the situation, stating that it is "unacceptable" for politicians to be instigating and sponsoring violence.
Alia revealed that an interim report from a judicial panel he set up has indicted several big names. The panel was established to investigate the causes of the attacks and identify those behind them. While Alia did not name the politicians involved, he vowed to take action as soon as he receives the full report next week.
The governor's allegations come on the heels of a recent attack on the Makurdi-Naka road, which has been under the control of armed Fulani militia groups for weeks. Several people were feared dead, and many others were injured in the attack, despite repeated assurances of military intervention
Alia emphasized his commitment to protecting the lives of the people of Benue State, stating, "If they do not love the lives of the people and they're only fighting for their own position, I think I am serving the interest of the common masses and it is a concern to me, and it is my right to protect it." As the governor awaits the full report from the judicial panel.
