A new wave of bandit attacks, believed to be orchestrated by loyalists of notorious bandit kingpin Bello Turji, has forced the residents of more than 20 villages in Sokoto State to flee their homes. The displaced villagers are now seeking refuge in Gatawa, a town located in the Sabon Birni Local Government Area.
According to Mallam Saminu, a local resident in Gatawa, the situation is dire, with many villagers fleeing to the town due to renewed threats from one of Turji’s top lieutenants. Some of the displaced individuals are staying with relatives, while others have been sheltered in two secondary schools near a military camp in the town.
The villages affected by the attacks include Makira, Shabanza, Katsalle, Dan Kura, Garin Tunkiya, Dama, Dan Tazako I, II, and III, and Gaugai. This mass displacement highlights the ongoing security challenges in the eastern part of Sokoto, where banditry continues to disrupt the lives of countless citizens despite efforts to restore peace through military operations.
The escalating violence has left many villagers facing an uncertain future as they try to rebuild their lives amidst the growing insecurity.
