The inquest into the death of 11-year-old Kaliyah Coa, who was swept away by the River Thames, has revealed that she likely died "swiftly" from the effects of cold water. Kaliyah was reported missing on March 31 after playing near Barge House Causeway in Woolwich, and her body was found two weeks later in Maritime Quay on the Isle of Dogs.
The senior coroner, Graeme Irvine, told the East London Coroner's Court that Kaliyah's cause of death was "unnatural" and that preliminary post-mortem investigations suggested she had not died from drowning. Instead, the effect of being in cold water would have caused unconsciousness and death relatively quickly.
Kaliyah's family has been left devastated by her death, with her loved ones describing their lives as "never being the same". In a statement, they said: "We were blessed to have Kaliyah, even if it was for such a short time. She will be missed so much."
The inquest is ongoing, with further tests pending to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Kaliyah's death. The Metropolitan Police had launched a major search operation after Kaliyah was reported missing, and her body was eventually found after an extensive search effort.
