A court in Georgia has sentenced Beka Jaiani, 26, to life in prison for the murder of Kesaria Abramidze, a 37-year-old transgender actress and model. The brutal attack took place on September 18, 2024, in Abramidze's home in Tbilisi, where she was stabbed over 50 times in the neck.
Jaiani was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Although he partially admitted guilt, he denied accusations of particular cruelty and gender-based motives. Despite regretting his actions, Jaiani did not attend the verdict hearing, citing his psychological and emotional state.
The investigation revealed that Jaiani and Abramidze had a tumultuous relationship, having been together for about two years before the killing. CCTV footage showed Jaiani waiting by the lift in Abramidze's apartment block and then running down the stairs less than 10 minutes later. Neighbors heard screams and discovered Abramidze's blood-drenched body in her apartment.
Kesaria Abramidze was a well-known figure in Georgia, having undergone gender reassignment surgery in 2014. She represented Georgia at Miss Trans Star International in 2018 and had a significant online following. Her murder is the third high-profile killing of a transgender woman in Georgia in recent years.
The murder sparked widespread outrage, particularly given the timing – a day after Georgia's parliament passed a law banning LGBTQ+ propaganda. Jaiani's lawyer has denounced the verdict and plans to appeal the conviction.
