Lagos Grenade Explosion: One Dead, Three Injured as Military-Grade Device Detonates in Metal Scrapyard
According to eyewitnesses, the explosion happened when scavengers attempted to dismantle a military-grade grenade they had found. The device detonated, killing one of the scavengers instantly and injuring three others.
A resident, Akin Olawale, described the chaotic scene, saying, "A loud explosion was heard around 12 pm, and the police were immediately contacted. It was later discovered that the scavengers were trying to cut open a grenade when it detonated."
Security operatives found two undetonated grenades at the scene, adding to the gravity of the situation. Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, shared details of the aftermath, saying, "We saw a vehicle rushing injured persons to the hospital. Those people were terribly injured."
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, stating that the explosion was caused by a military-grade grenade. He assured the public that the situation has been controlled, and an investigation has commenced to determine the full circumstances surrounding the explosion.
The incident has raised concerns about the presence of military-grade explosives in civilian areas and the need for increased vigilance and awareness among residents. The authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
