Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, a distinguished Nigerian politician and mathematician who served as the Governor of Oyo State in 1983, has passed away at the age of 89, just days shy of his 90th birthday.
Born on April 14, 1935, in Ibadan, Olunloyo had a remarkable career in public service. He held various positions, including Commissioner for Economic Development in the Western Region at the age of 27. He also served as the first Rector of both The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and Kwara State Polytechnic. In 1983, he briefly served as the Governor of Oyo State before the military regime of General Muhammadu Buhari took power.
Beyond politics, Olunloyo was renowned for his contributions to mathematics and education. He was affectionately known as a "walking encyclopedia" due to his vast knowledge.
In recent years, Olunloyo's health had been a subject of concern. In July 2022, his family addressed rumors of his death, confirming he was alive but facing health challenges and was receiving care at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
The family has requested privacy during this period of mourning and is making arrangements for a befitting burial.
Dr. Olunloyo's passing marks the end of an era for Oyo State, and he will be remembered for his significant contributions to the state's development and his enduring legacy in Nigerian politics and education.
