A 56-year-old former registered nurse and foster mother, Gina Emmanuel, has been found guilty of first-degree premeditated murder and child abuse in the death of her 7-year-old adopted daughter, Samaya Emmanuel. The verdict was delivered by a jury in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
According to prosecutors, Emmanuel subjected Samaya and her two sisters to extreme physical and emotional abuse, including forcing them to eat human feces, intentionally burning them, chaining them in chairs, and withholding food and water. The abuse ultimately led to Samaya's tragic death in 2018.
During the trial, Emmanuel's now 18-year-old adopted daughter testified about the horrors she and her sisters endured at the hands of their foster mother. The prosecution presented evidence of Emmanuel's fixation on control and her use of heinous abuse to enforce her rules.
The jury found Emmanuel guilty on one count of first-degree premeditated murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse. Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle praised the jury's verdict, saying that it brought to light the horrors Samaya suffered before her death.
Emmanuel is scheduled to appear in court for her sentencing hearing on April 30, where she faces a mandatory sentence of life in a state correctional facility without the chance of parole.
The case highlights the importance of protecting vulnerable children from abuse and neglect. The outcome of this trial serves as a reminder that those who commit such heinous crimes will be held accountable for their actions.
