A terrifying incident has shaken the football world as Ecuadorian footballer Jackson Rodriguez hid under his bed while his wife and five-year-old son were kidnapped in a brutal house raid. The incident occurred on Wednesday night in Guayaquil, a city plagued by organized crime.
Masked men broke down Rodriguez's front door at 3 am, ransacking the property and taking his wife and son. The 26-year-old defender, who plays for Emelec in the LigaPro, pleaded for the safe return of his family.
Police chief Edison Rodriguez confirmed the kidnapping, stating that the men asked for the footballer before snatching his family. The kidnappers fled in a gray-colored double-cab pickup truck, which was spotted by Rodriguez from a window.
The incident comes amid a state of emergency declared by the Ecuadorian government in nine areas, including Guayas province, where Guayaquil is located. Organized crime groups have wreaked havoc across the country, with 2,345 violent deaths reported between January and March.
Rodriguez, a talented full-back, has played 9 times for Emelec this season. He is desperate for the safe return of his loved ones. Kidnapping of footballers is not unheard of in Ecuador, with a similar incident occurring last December involving Quito star Pedro Perlaza.
