A heartbreaking tale of abandonment and greed has emerged following the death of 23-year-old Osarugue, a Nigerian woman who succumbed to a severe illness in Libya on April 4, 2025. Despite efforts to raise funds for her medical treatment and transportation back to Nigeria, Osarugue's family allegedly refused to support her, leaving anti-human trafficking advocate Yakubu Oyiza and her team to bear the costs.
Oyiza expressed her outrage and disappointment on Facebook, revealing that Osarugue's family had not only abandoned her during her illness but also demanded her properties shortly after her passing. "Since yesterday, I called Osarugue's family to inform them of her passing, but they haven't followed up to ask how she's doing. We sent 350k for her burial, but now they're asking for more. And worst of all, they are calling for her properties."
Oyiza's post highlighted the plight of young Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad and the often-difficult family dynamics that can arise in times of crisis. The case has sparked widespread outrage and concern, with many calling for greater support and protection for vulnerable individuals like Osarugue.
As Oyiza poignantly noted, "Most of these young girls fleeing to Libya have something haunting them. I am devastated by this whole situation." The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by many young Nigerians and the need for greater empathy, support, and understanding.
